What should you check before buying a used phone?
Check the exact model and storage, physical condition, battery, cameras, audio, charging and network compatibility. Confirm that the seller can remove their account locks and that the phone can be activated for your use before paying. Photos and a seller profile cannot establish a phone’s ownership, authenticity or working condition.

Ask about the device before meeting
Ask for the model, storage, age, known faults, repair history and included accessories. Clarify whether any warranty or return arrangement exists; do not assume a private sale has the same terms as a retailer. Compare the asking price with similar devices in comparable condition.
Arrange enough time to inspect the phone in a suitable public place. Ask the seller to charge it and bring any stated accessories. A refusal to allow reasonable checks is a reason to pause. Do not pay a deposit simply because someone claims other buyers are waiting.
Inspect the hardware and test everyday functions
Remove the case with permission and examine the screen, frame and charging port. Test touch input across the display, buttons, charging, cameras, video playback, speakers and microphone. Check Wi-Fi and, where practical, calls and mobile data using a compatible SIM. Confirm that the model supports your carrier’s requirements.
Ask about battery life and review available battery-health information. On supported iPhones, inspect battery health and Parts and Service History in Settings. Missing information is not proof that a battery or repair is sound. A short inspection can uncover obvious problems but cannot rule out every intermittent fault.
Resolve account locks before handover
For an iPhone, follow Apple’s preowned-device checklist linked below. Do not buy one with Activation Lock enabled. An erased phone showing a welcome screen still needs to be set up and activated; the welcome screen alone does not prove that you can use it.
For other phones, consult the manufacturer’s official transfer and reset instructions for the exact model. Have the seller remove their accounts and complete the required reset themselves. Never ask for or share account passwords or one-time codes. If setup requests the previous owner’s credentials, resolve that with the owner before completing the purchase.
Agree the final condition, included accessories, price and handover details. Keep a private record of the agreement without publishing device identifiers or personal documents. Walk away if ownership, activation or a material defect remains unresolved.
