How do you photograph items for sale?

Photograph the actual item in soft daylight against an uncluttered background. Start with a clear view of the whole item, then show its sides, useful details, included accessories and any damage. Keep colours and condition accurate so a buyer knows what to expect before arranging a viewing.

Prepare the item and the light

Your phone’s built-in camera app is enough; you do not need a paid photography app to make a useful listing. Photograph the item clearly first. Image search or an AI suggestion can help identify a model, but a photo alone cannot establish its resale value or hidden condition.

Clean the item using a method suitable for its material, and wipe your camera lens. Place smaller objects near a window, away from direct sunlight. For furniture, clear nearby clutter and leave enough space to show its shape. Turn off coloured lighting that changes how the item looks.

Hold the camera steady and tap the item to focus. Move closer instead of relying on heavy digital zoom. Check the image at full size: labels should be readable where safe to show, and edges should look sharp. Retake blurred pictures before putting everything away.

Show what a buyer needs to inspect

Use a complete, unobstructed view as the cover photo. Add angles that answer different questions instead of repeating the same shot. Photograph the back, base, connections or moving parts when they matter. Show accessories together so buyers can see what is included.

Take a close-up and a wider view of each noticeable scratch, stain or broken part. For size-sensitive items, include measurements in the description and photograph a measuring tape if useful. A photograph cannot demonstrate every function, so describe what you tested and what remains untested.

Check privacy before uploading

Look for reflections, faces, house numbers, delivery labels, documents and computer screens in every frame. Remove or cover phone numbers, addresses, serial numbers, IMEIs, account details and other personal identifiers. Do not upload receipts containing personal information; describe included proof of purchase without publishing it.

Use your own current photographs. Avoid stock images, beauty filters or edits that hide wear. Crop distractions without cutting away relevant condition details. Finally, compare the photos with your description: both should show the same item, accessories and defects.
