How do you sell a used laptop in India?

Back up your files and sign out of your accounts, then wipe the laptop: on Windows, use Reset this PC with Remove everything and Clean data; on a Mac, use Erase All Content and Settings or erase it from macOS Recovery. Remove it from your Microsoft or Apple account, list the exact processor, memory, storage and battery condition with photos of any wear, and hand it over only once the money is in your own bank or UPI app.

Back up and sign out before you wipe

Copy your files to an external drive or cloud storage, and open a few of them to check that they copied. Export your browser bookmarks if you want them, and sign out of apps tied to a paid licence or subscription, so it stays with you rather than with the laptop.

If the drive is encrypted with BitLocker, Microsoft advises making sure you have the BitLocker recovery key before you reset. On a Mac, Apple’s checklist says to back up, cancel or transfer any AppleCare plan, and sign out of iCloud and iMessage before you erase it.

Do not sell a laptop that your employer owns or manages; return it, or ask the IT team first. If you set a BIOS or firmware password, remove it so that the buyer can use the laptop.

Wipe Windows or macOS properly

On Windows, open Settings, then System, then Recovery, and choose Reset this PC. Microsoft describes Remove everything as reinstalling Windows and removing all your personal files, apps and settings, and recommends turning on Clean data if you plan to sell the PC, because it makes removed files harder to recover. It takes a while, so keep the charger connected. Microsoft also notes that this is consumer-grade erasure that does not meet government or industry standards, so take advice before selling a laptop that held sensitive work data.

After the reset, sign in at account.microsoft.com/devices and remove the laptop from your Microsoft account, as Microsoft’s selling checklist describes.

On a Mac with Apple silicon or the Apple T2 Security Chip and macOS Monterey or later, use Erase All Content and Settings. On other Macs, Apple’s guide explains how to erase the disk from macOS Recovery and reinstall macOS. Either way, leave the Mac at its setup screen for the new owner.

List the specs and condition a buyer will check

Give the brand and exact model, the processor and its generation, the memory (RAM), the storage type and size, the screen size, and the operating system installed after the reset. Say how long the battery lasts on a charge, whether the charger is the original, and any repairs, dead keys, loose hinges or marks on the screen.

Photograph the laptop open and switched on, the keyboard, the ports on each side, the lid, the base and every scratch or dent. Keep the serial number, service tag and bill out of the photos, and show them in person to a buyer who is ready to pay. Price it against laptops near you with the same processor generation, memory and storage, rather than against what you paid.

On Flipns, laptops sit under Computers & Laptops, with fields for brand and warranty. If the laptop no longer works, list it with the condition For parts and describe the fault, so that repair shops and people who fix laptops can find it.

Let the buyer test it where there is power

Meet somewhere with a power socket and Wi-Fi, or use a phone hotspot, such as a café. Let the buyer start the laptop from cold, connect to Wi-Fi, type on every row of keys, and try the trackpad, webcam, speakers and each port while watching the battery level for a few minutes.

Confirm the payment in your own banking or UPI app before the laptop and charger leave your hands. A screenshot is not proof, and receiving money never needs a QR scan or your UPI PIN. Keep a private note of the date, model, serial number, price and buyer’s name, then mark the listing sold.
