How do you sell an old phone safely in India?
Back up your data, then remove the accounts that lock the phone to you: your Google Account on Android, plus your Samsung account on a Galaxy, or your Apple Account on an iPhone. Erase the phone from Settings, take out the SIM and any memory card, and keep the IMEI and bill off your listing. Meet the buyer somewhere public, let them test it, and hand it over only once the money shows in your own bank or UPI app.

Back up, then remove the accounts that lock the phone
Move your photos, contacts and chats to your new phone or a backup first, and check that they arrived: everything left on the phone you are selling is erased in the next steps. Have your account passwords to hand, because the phone may ask for them.
Android phones are protected by the Google Account signed in on them. Google’s help says a protected phone cannot be reset without its screen lock or that account’s password, and that if this cannot be given during setup, the phone cannot be used at all after the reset. Removing your Google Account from the phone turns that protection off. Remove it, remove your Samsung account too on a Galaxy, and then reset the phone from the Settings app.
On an iPhone, follow Apple’s checklist linked below: unpair any Apple Watch, sign out of your Apple Account, then use Erase All Content and Settings. Apple says erasing the iPhone turns off Find My and Activation Lock, and that you may need your Apple Account password to do it. If the phone uses an eSIM, choose to erase the eSIM profile as well, and remove the phone from your list of trusted devices afterwards.
Take out the SIM, and keep the IMEI and bill private
Remove your SIM card and any memory card before anyone else handles the phone, and move an eSIM number to your new phone first. The box label, the bill and the code *#06# all show its IMEI, the number that identifies the handset. Keep the IMEI, the serial number and the bill out of your photos and description, as you would your address.
A careful buyer may want to check the IMEI before paying. At the meeting, dial *#06# on the phone to show it, and let them check it with the Department of Telecommunications’ Know Your Mobile service, by sending KYM followed by the 15-digit IMEI to 14422 or on the Sanchar Saathi portal. The CEIR page tells buyers to avoid a phone shown as blacklisted, duplicate or already in use, so a clean result works in your favour. Show the bill in person rather than sending a photo of it.
Keep a private note of the sale with the date, the model, the IMEI, the price and the buyer’s name, in case anyone asks about the phone later.
Describe the phone the way a buyer will check it
Give the exact model, storage, colour and age, the battery health if the phone shows it, any repairs or replaced parts, and what comes in the box. On an iPhone, Apple’s checklist also points you to Parts and Service History, which records repairs. Photograph the screen switched on, the back, the edges and any crack or scratch.
Price it against similar phones listed near you in the same condition, not against what you paid. On Flipns, photograph the phone, check the draft the listing assistant writes, and set your price. Buyers message you in Flipns chat or send an offer, so your phone number stays off the listing unless you choose to publish it.
Meet, let the buyer test it, then hand it over
Meet somewhere busy, such as a café or a mall, and give the buyer time to test calls with their own SIM, the cameras, charging and the screen; the buyer’s checklist linked below covers what they will look at. If the phone is still signed in when you meet, finish the reset in front of the buyer rather than handing it over with your accounts on it.
Open your own banking or UPI app and confirm the money is there before the phone leaves your hands. Receiving money never needs you to scan a QR code or enter your UPI PIN, and a payment screenshot proves nothing. Once it has gone, mark the listing sold.
